After three years of candidacy, Trevecca Nazarene University is now officially the first university in Middle Tennessee to be NCAA Division II.

Trevecca began the admittance process for NCAA Division II in 2011, and shortly after that joined the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), which would eventually become a Division II conference.

Beginning September 1, 2014, Trevecca’s 15 intercollegiate teams will be eligible for post-season play, and the university can now display the NCAA logo.

President Dan Boone on Wednesday received a phone call from NCAA officials notifying him the university was approved for full and active membership.

“Three years ago we began a journey,” said Mark Elliot, athletic director. “This is not something we do as recreation. We’re invested.”

During the three-year process of candidacy Trevecca’s athletic department added four new intercollegiate sports, totaling 15 teams. The department also took 14 championships, one President’s Cup, and one President’s Cup runner-up.

Mikayla Dodson, incoming junior and member of the women’s golf team, said she thinks the status will raise Trevecca’s athletic profile.

“We get to play on a bigger stage, We get to show off what all Trevecca has to offer,” Dodson said.
